 The Monkees
The Monkees were a unique entry into the world of pop music when they were created as a made-for-television musical band. The Monkees musical group was created in 1966 by for the express purpose of being the stars and musical interest in a televsion comedy/music show.

Unlike normal bands, which are formed by a group of friends, or brought together through musicians answering "musician-wanted" ads, this pop group was put together by television producers Robert "Bob" Rafelson and Bert Schneider for the American television series The Monkees. The band was composed of the acting quartet of Americans Micky Dolenz, Michael Nesmith, and Peter Tork, and Englishman Davy Jones. The band's music was initially supervised by famed music producer Don Kirshner.

This television show would entertain television viewers from 1966 to 1968. Despite their television show's cancellation, the Monkees continued to record original music through 1970. The twentieth anniversary of the founding of the Monkees in 1986 brought added publicity, and sparked reunion tours and performances, leading to an uptick in the popularty of the Monkees.

The best known Monkees songs inlude "(Theme From) The Monkees," "Last Train to Clarksville," "I'm a Believer," "(I'm Not Your) Steppin' Stone," "Pleasant Valley Sunday," and "Daydream Believer."

Davy Jones died on February 29, 2012, of an apparant heart attack at the age of 66. Davy Jones was the first of the Monkees to pass away.
